Thanks and Excuse Me

Level 1Sounds Like dhan'yavāda / māpha karā

Use माफ करा with elders and strangers, and a friendly सॉरी with friends.

How It Works

You want toSay
thank someoneधन्यवाद, थँक्यू
start a question politelyमाफ करा, …
apologize to an elder or a strangerमाफ करा
apologize to a friendसॉरी रे (to a man), सॉरी गं (to a woman)

माफ करा comes from माफ करणे (to forgive). The -ा ending makes it a respectful request, the same -ा that you saw in बसा and घ्या.

When you start a question, put माफ करा first and then ask: माफ करा, बस स्टॉप कुठे आहे?

An answer to a thank-you or a sorry is ठीक आहे (it's fine).

Add a family word to make either phrase warmer: धन्यवाद, काका. Marathi speakers use these words all day.
