Formal Noun and Verb Phrases
Each meaning of a noun has its own light verb, so learn them as pairs: निर्णय घेणे, प्रयत्न करणे, परवानगी देणे.
How It Works
Many formal verbs are really two words: a noun that holds the meaning and a light verb that fills the grammar slot. The light verb is set for each meaning of the noun: परवानगी देणे is to give permission, and परवानगी घेणे is to take it.

The verb carries the tense and the person. In a completed action with -ने and a noun that has no ending, the verb agrees with the noun in gender and number: समितीने निर्णय घेतला (masculine), विद्यार्थ्यांनी प्रयत्न केले (masculine plural), मंडळाने परवानगी दिली (feminine).
The noun can take a longer modifier in front: योजना राबवण्याचा निर्णय घेतला. The verb stays at the end.
Many pairs, such as काळजी घेणे, मदत करणे and लक्ष देणे, are everyday words. Reports and notices also use pairs like निर्णय घेणे and परवानगी देणे for official subjects. Pairs are learned by seeing them together, so keep them in whole phrases.

- रुग्णांना वाचवण्यासाठी डॉक्टरांनी शर्थीचे प्रयत्न केले.
The doctors made every effort to save the patients.
प्रयत्न केले is plural because प्रयत्न is plural here.
- पोलिसांनी मिरवणुकीला परवानगी दिली.
The police gave permission for the procession.
परवानगी pairs with देणे, and दिली agrees with the feminine noun.
Common Mistakes
Using करणे with निर्णय.
समितीने निर्णय केला.समितीने निर्णय घेतला.The set phrase is निर्णय घेणे, so the verb is घेतला.
Using घेणे with चर्चा.
दोन्ही देशांनी चर्चा घेतली.दोन्ही देशांनी चर्चा केली.चर्चा goes with करणे.
