माहीत does not change, whoever the person is.

How It Works

Name the thing known right after the person: मला त्याचा पत्ता माहीत नाही.

The helper follows the thing that is known: मला हे माहीत आहे, but मला ते लोक माहीत आहेत.

Ask with का: तुला माहीत आहे का? Ask who with कोणाला: कोणाला माहीत आहे?

माहीत is for facts. माहिती (with a short ि) is a different word that means information.

To say that you know a person, the pattern is the same: मला सई माहीत आहे. For a person you have met, ओळखणे (to recognize) is also used: मी सईला ओळखतो.

  1. मला माहीत आहे.

    I know.

    मला marks the person who knows.

  2. मला त्याचा पत्ता माहीत नाही.

    I don't know his address.

    माहीत नाही says that the speaker does not know.

  3. तुला हे माहीत आहे का?

    Do you know this?

    तुला marks the person who is asked.

  4. सईला उत्तर माहीत आहे.

    Sai knows the answer.

    सईला marks the person who knows.

  5. आजोबांना हा रस्ता माहीत आहे.

    Grandpa knows this road.

    आजोबांना marks the respected person who knows.

Common Mistakes

  • Using मी as the knower.

    मी माहीत आहे.
    मला माहीत आहे.

    The knower takes -ला: मला.

  • Making the helper agree with तू.

    तुला हे माहीत आहेस का?
    तुला हे माहीत आहे का?

    The helper follows the thing known, not the person who knows.
