मी केले / तू केलेस

Past Actions with मी and तू

Level 2Sounds Like mī kēlē / tū kēlēsa

मी and तू do not take -ने, and the verb ending shows the object and the person.

How It Works

DoerMasculine objectFeminine objectNeuter object
मी, आम्हीकेलाकेलीकेले
तूकेलासकेलीसकेलेस
तुम्हीकेलातकेलीतकेलेत

So मी चहा केला, तू चहा केलास and तुम्ही चहा केलात all go with the masculine object चहा.

A question with काय uses the neuter form: तू काय केलेस? (What did you do?) तुम्ही काय केलेत?

Compare a verb with no object. It matches the doer: मी गेलो (a man) and मी गेले (a woman). With an object, most verbs match the object, so a man and a woman both say मी चहा केला. A few verbs follow the doer, as in मी मराठी शिकलो (a man).

As the marker of the doer in the past, -ने belongs to third persons only: त्याने, तिने, त्यांनी. With a -ला object the verb stays neuter: मी मुलाला पाहिले.

आम्ही is plural, but the verb still follows the object: आम्ही भाजी आणली (We brought vegetables). तू भाजी आणलीस and तुम्ही भाजी आणलीत use the same object.

Examples (5)

  1. मी चहा केला.

    I made tea.

The verb matches the masculine object चहा, and मी takes no -ने.

  2. तू पत्र लिहिलेस.

    You wrote a letter.

लिहिलेस adds -स for तू to the neuter form.

  3. तुम्ही पोळी खाल्लीत.

    You ate the chapati.

खाल्लीत adds -त for तुम्ही to the feminine form.

  4. आम्ही गाणे म्हटले.

    We sang a song.

आम्ही takes no -ने, and म्हटले matches the neuter object गाणे.

  5. मी भाजी आणली.

    I brought the vegetables.

आणली matches the feminine object भाजी.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding -ने to मी.

    मीने चहा केला.
    मी चहा केला.

    मी, तू, आम्ही and तुम्ही take no -ने.

  • Using the तुम्ही ending with तू.

    तू काय केलात?
    तू काय केलेस?

With तू the verb ends in -स, so the form is केलेस. केलात goes with तुम्ही.
