केलं / केले

Spoken Spellings

Level 3Sounds Like kēlaṁ / kēlē

Only neuter -े endings and words like असे, कसे and बरे have a spoken form with -ं.

How It Works

People say केलं and write it that way in messages. Printed Marathi writes केले. Both mean the same.

WrittenSpoken style
केले, गेले, घेतलेकेलं, गेलं, घेतलं
मुले, घरेमुलं, घरं
असे, तसे, कसेअसं, तसं, कसं
बरे, चांगलेबरं, चांगलं
मी करीनमी करेन

Only -े endings change to -ं, and these are neuter endings and the words असे, तसे, कसे and बरे. Masculine and feminine endings stay the same: केला, केली, and the masculine plural गेले.

Use the written forms in lessons, essays, letters and news. Use the spoken forms in messages, in dialogue and in captions when you want the text to sound like talk.

The future करेन is the everyday spoken form of करीन for मी, and it is also common in informal writing: मी उद्या फोन करेन. This course writes केले and करीन in its lessons, so you will meet the spoken forms mainly in dialogue and chat.

Common Mistakes

  • Changing a feminine ending too.

    तिने पोळी केली.

Only neuter -े endings have the -ं spelling. पोळी is feminine, so the verb is केली.
