माझे डोके दुखते

Saying What Hurts

Level 2Sounds Like mājhē ḍōkē dukhatē

The verb and the word for "my" both follow the body part: डोके is neuter, and पाय is plural when both legs hurt.

How It Works

To say that you have a headache, say that your head hurts: माझे डोके दुखते. The body part is the subject, and the verb is दुखणे.

PartGenderSentence
डोकेneuterमाझे डोके दुखते.
पोटneuterतुझे पोट दुखते.
दातmasculineमाझा दात दुखतो.
कंबरfeminineमाझी कंबर दुखते.
पायpluralमाझे पाय दुखतात.

Each part needs its own form of "my": माझा, माझी or माझे. For other people, join the ending to the person: ताईची कंबर दुखते.

Use दुखत आहे to say the pain is going on right now: माझे डोके दुखत आहे. The simple दुखते also fits a pain you have today or one that comes often.

For a part that hurts more strongly, add खूप: माझे पाय खूप दुखतात. (My legs hurt a lot.)

People also say मला पोट दुखते, with मला. It means the same.
