कोणता / कोणती / कोणते

Asking Which One

Level 2Sounds Like kōṇatā / kōṇatī / kōṇatē

The plural forms are कोणते for masculine, कोणत्या for feminine and कोणती for neuter nouns.

How It Works

Put the form of कोणता right before the noun, or use it alone when the noun is clear: कोणती बस? Which one?

NounSingularPlural
masculine (रंग)कोणता रंगकोणते रंग
feminine (बस)कोणती बसकोणत्या बस
neuter (पुस्तक)कोणते पुस्तककोणती पुस्तके

Check the noun's gender first. बस is feminine, घर is neuter and रंग is masculine in Marathi.

Before a noun with an ending, every gender takes कोणत्या: कोणत्या दुकानात? (In which shop?) कोणत्या मुलाला? (Which boy?) This is the form that goes with endings such as -त and -ला.

कोण asks who, and कोणता asks which. कोण आले? (Who came?) is open. कोणता मुलगा आला? (Which boy came?) picks one from a group.

An answer often uses हा, ही or हे, because they match the noun in the same way: ही बस.
