Whenever and Wherever

The doubling turns one time or place into every time or every place, so the sentence states something that always happens.

How It Works

Level 4 taught जेव्हा … तेव्हा (when … then) and जिथे … तिथे (where … there). Saying each word twice adds the meaning of every, so the sentence covers each single time or place.

With a present verb the pattern states a habit: जेव्हा जेव्हा वीज जाते, तेव्हा तेव्हा बाबा मेणबत्ती लावतात. With a past verb it reports something that happened every time: जिथे जिथे पाऊस पडला, तिथे तिथे पाणी साचले.

With a future verb it makes a rule or a promise, which is why notices use it: जेव्हा जेव्हा सूचना येतील, तेव्हा तेव्हा नागरिकांना कळवण्यात येईल.

The second half is often shortened to one word, तेव्हा or तिथे, in speech. In writing, keep both words doubled so that the two halves match. Mixed forms such as जेव्हा जेव्हा … तिथे are wrong, because a time word needs a time answer and a place word needs a place answer.

    Whenever I go to Pune, I eat misal. A woman is speaking.

    जेव्हा जेव्हा and तेव्हा तेव्हा frame the habit; जाते and खाते show a woman.

  2. जिथे जिथे पाऊस पडला, तिथे तिथे पाणी साचले.

    Wherever it rained, water collected.

    जिथे जिथे and तिथे तिथे match place with place.

  3. जेव्हा जेव्हा आजी गोष्ट सांगायच्या, तेव्हा तेव्हा आम्ही शांत बसायचो.

    Whenever Grandmother told a story, we sat quietly.

    The doubled words go with a past habit; आजी takes the respectful plural सांगायच्या.

  4. जिथे जिथे मी गेलो, तिथे तिथे लोकांनी माझे स्वागत केले.

    Wherever I went, people welcomed me. A man is speaking.

    जिथे जिथे is answered by तिथे तिथे; गेलो shows a man.

  5. जेव्हा जेव्हा सूचना येतील, तेव्हा तेव्हा नागरिकांना कळवण्यात येईल.

    Citizens will be informed whenever instructions arrive.

    A future verb turns the doubled pair into a promise.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi जब जब and तब तब.

    जब जब मी पुण्याला जाते, तब तब मिसळ खाते.
    जेव्हा जेव्हा मी पुण्याला जाते, तेव्हा तेव्हा मिसळ खाते.

    जब and तब are Hindi. Marathi uses जेव्हा and तेव्हा.
