Relative Words with Endings

Level 4Sounds Like jyālā / jyācā / jyānē

The ending shows the person's part in the first clause: ज्याने पत्र लिहिले, तो माझा भाऊ आहे.

How It Works

जो is the word that links a describing clause to a person: ज्याचे घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे. When the person needs an ending in the first clause, जो takes the same shapes as other pronouns.

-ला (to)-चा (of)-ने (doer)
a man or thingज्यालाज्याचाज्याने
a womanजिलाजिचाजिने
severalज्यांनाज्यांचाज्यांनी

The -चा word agrees with the thing owned, as it does everywhere in Marathi: ज्याचे घर (neuter), ज्याची गाडी (feminine), ज्याचा फोन (masculine). The -ने form is for completed actions on an object: ज्याने पत्र लिहिले.

Other endings and joined words attach to the same shape: ज्याच्याशी, ज्याच्याकडे, जिच्याबरोबर, ज्यांच्यासाठी. The main clause usually opens with तो, ती or ते, in the shape that fits the main clause: ज्याला … त्याला, जिने … तिने.

The same shapes stand for things. When a noun follows, ज्या stays a separate word before the noun and the ending goes on the noun: ज्या खुर्चीवर तू बसला आहेस, ती जुनी आहे. (The chair you are sitting on is old. A man is being addressed.) Without the noun, the word takes the gender of the thing: जिच्यावर (feminine), ज्यावर (neuter or masculine).

Examples (5)

  1. ज्याचे घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे.

The man whose house is big is my friend.

ज्याचे means “whose” and agrees with घर, a neuter noun.

  2. ज्यांना भूक लागली आहे, ते आधी जेवतील.

Those who are hungry will eat first.

ज्यांना is “to whom” for several people.

  3. ज्याने पत्र लिहिले, तो माझा भाऊ आहे.

The man who wrote the letter is my brother.

ज्याने marks the doer of a completed action.

  4. ज्याच्याशी मी काल बोललो, तो शिक्षक आहे.

The man I spoke to yesterday is a teacher. A man is speaking.

    ज्याच्याशी joins -शी to the shape ज्याच्या-.

  5. जिच्याबरोबर मी रोज जाते, ती सई आहे.

The girl I go with every day is Sai. A woman is speaking.

जिच्याबरोबर is the form for a woman, with -बरोबर joined on.

Common Mistakes

  • Using जो as it is when the sentence needs an ending.

    जो घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे.
    ज्याचे घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे.

“Whose house” needs the -चा shape ज्याचे; जो alone means only “who”.

  • Not matching the -चा word to the thing owned.

    ज्याचा घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे.
    ज्याचे घर मोठे आहे, तो माझा मित्र आहे.

घर is neuter, so the word is ज्याचे; the owner being a man does not change that.
