-त जाणे

Developing Step by Step

Level 4Sounds Like ta jāṇē

It often goes with होणे for change: मुले मोठी होत गेली.

How It Works

Use -त जाणे for a slow change that you can watch: the rain gets heavier, the road gets narrower, a story gets better as you read.

growingपाऊस वाढत गेला.

With होणे, the pattern becomes होत जाणे: रस्ता अरुंद होत गेला. The word before होत describes how the thing turns out: अरुंद, मोठी, कमी, जास्त.

जाणे agrees with the one who changes or acts: पाऊस … गेला, कथा … गेली, मुले … गेली. In the past it is गेला, गेली, गेले; in a request it is जा.

Compare the two ways to keep going. बोलत राहिला says he did not stop. बोलत गेला says he went on and on, often telling one thing after another. A change that grows or shrinks, such as पाऊस वाढत गेला, takes जाणे.

A person can be the one who goes on: ती गात गेली means she sang on and on, one song after another.
