होणे has two main uses. It means to become: ती डॉक्टर झाली (she became a doctor). It also means to happen: बैठक झाली (the meeting happened).

Many everyday phrases use it: उशीर झाला (it got late), काम झाले (the work is done), आनंद झाला (I became happy).

The question काय झाले? means what happened? The verb is in the neuter, the form used with काय.

The present form tells what always happens or what a sum makes: दोन आणि दोन चार होतात (two and two make four). The past tells about an event such as rain: आज पाऊस झाला (it rained today).
