कहलथिन

Respect for Both People

Level 5Sounds Like kahalathina

-थिन shows respect for both the doer and the listener.

How It Works

This is the top level of respect in the verb. Both people are respected, so the ending shows it twice: respect for the doer and respect for the listener.

VerbBoth respectedMeaning
कहबकहलथिनtold
करबकएलथिनdid for / called
देबदेलथिनgave to
  • बाबूजी and काका are both elders, so the verb is कहलथिन, not कहलक or कहलकनि.
  • The spelling is -थिन, not the older -थिन्ह.
  • If the doer is respected and you are unsure, use कहलनि: it is correct and polite.

You will meet -थिन in stories about family and in careful speech. Learners can follow it by remembering that -थिन means "both people count".

Common Mistakes

  • Using कहलकनि when the doer is respected.

    बाबूजी काका केँ सभ बात कहलथिन।

-लक shows a plain doer, but Father is respected.
