Reporting What Someone Said

Level 4Sounds Like kahalani jē

Report speech with जे and keep the speaker's own words.

How It Works

The pattern is: who spoke + कहलनि or कहलक + जे + what they said.

SpeakerVerb
respectedकहलनि
plainकहलक

Examples:

(Mother said the rice is ready.)
(The little boy said he is hungry; literally, I am hungry.)
(Neha said she would call in the evening.)

When the person you told is respected, add -यनि: हम कहलियनि जे अहाँ चिन्ता जुनि करू (I told him not to worry).

The pronoun does not shift. If you change हम to ओ, the sentence means something else: that a third person will act.

Use the same pattern after सोचब, बुझब and सुनब.

Examples (5)

He said he would come tomorrow.

हम stays the speaker's own word.

Mother said the rice is ready.

    कहलनि: a respected speaker.

The little boy said he was hungry.

    कहलक: a plain speaker.

Neha said she would call in the evening.

The future stays in the report.

I told him not to worry.

    कहलियनि: the listener is respected.

Common Mistakes

  • Shifting the pronoun like English does.

Changing हम to ओ makes it a different person who will come.
