देलियनि

Showing Respect to the Receiver

Level 4Sounds Like dēliyani

When you do something for a person you respect, the verb can end in -यनि.

How It Works

The ending shows who receives.

ReceiverPastFuture
respected (दादी, काका, गुरुजी)देलियनिदेबनि
plain (बउआ, a friend)देलियै—

The receiver comes before the verb with केँ: हम दादी केँ चाह देलियनि. A pronoun for the receiver uses the object form: हम हुनका चाह देलियनि.

The ending also joins other verbs of giving or doing for someone: हम काका केँ चिट्ठी पठा देलियनि (I sent uncle a letter). हुनका लेल ठेकुआ पठा देबनि (I'll send some thekua for him).

The spelling is -यनि. Older books write -न्हि, as in देलियन्हि. Write -यनि.

With a plain receiver, use -यै (next entry). देलहुँ alone is still correct, but it shows less respect for the receiver.

Examples (5)

  1. हम दादी केँ चाह देलियनि।

    I gave Grandma tea.

    देलियनि: the receiver is respected.

  2. हुनका लेल ठेकुआ पठा देबनि।

I will send some thekua for him.

देबनि: the future of the same ending.

  3. हम काका केँ चिट्ठी पठा देलियनि।

    I sent Uncle a letter.

पठा देलियनि: the helper verb takes the ending.

    I gave Grandmother water.

    नानी is respected.

  5. हम बाबा केँ धोती देलियनि।

The ending marks respect for बाबा.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the plain ending for a respected receiver.

    हम दादी केँ चाह देलियै।
    हम दादी केँ चाह देलियनि।

-यै is for a child or a close friend. A grandparent takes -यनि, or the plain देलहुँ.
