जे + Clause

Saying That with जे

Level 3Sounds Like jē (upavākya)

After verbs like say, know and think, जे means "that".

How It Works

The order is: main clause, जे, then the clause that holds the thought.

Main verbExample
बुझल अछि (know)हमरा बुझल अछि जे ओ आएल छथि।
कहब (say)ओ कहलनि जे काल्हि बरखा होएत।
सोचब (think)हम सोचैत छी जे अहाँ ठीके कहैत छी।
लगैत अछि (seems)हमरा लगैत अछि जे ओ आएत।

The clause after जे keeps its own tense and its own person. If someone says "I will come", Maithili reports ओ कहलनि जे हम आएब, keeping the speaker's own word हम (see the entry on reporting speech).

Do not use Hindi कि here. In Maithili, कि means "or" in a choice: चाह लेब कि कॉफी? (Will you have tea or coffee?).

This जे is not the relative जे in जे ... से. The relative जे describes a noun and has a partner से. The जे here has no partner.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi कि for "that".

    ओ कहलनि कि काल्हि बरखा होएत।
    ओ कहलनि जे काल्हि बरखा होएत।

कि is Hindi here. Maithili uses जे for "that".
