драго ми е што

Glad That and Sorry That

Level 3Sounds Like drago mi e što

To say why you feel something, add што and a full sentence: Драго ми е што дојде. (I'm glad you came.)

How It Works

Feeling + што + fact.

  • Драго ми е што си тука. — I'm glad you're here.
  • Жал ми е што не те повикав. — I'm sorry I didn't invite you.
  • Се радувам што успеа. — I'm happy you made it.
  • Среќна сум што те запознав. — I'm happy I met you.

The clause after што has an ordinary verb with its own ending, in whatever tense fits the fact.

Што or да? Што gives a fact that already holds. Да names the action itself, which you are doing now or about to do: Драго ми е да те запознаам is said while you are meeting someone, and Драго ми беше што те запознав when you say goodbye.

Што or дека? Дека mainly reports what someone says, thinks or knows (see дека). After feelings, што is the usual word. This што is not the relative што from што во односни реченици; here it introduces a whole reason.

With a noun. If the reason is a noun or pronoun, use за: Жал ми е за тоа. (I'm sorry about that.) · Драго ми е за тебе. (I'm happy for you.) A verb cannot follow за directly, so a reason with a verb needs што. For reasons in general, see бидејќи; затоа што.

Common Mistakes

  • Using за before a verb.

    Жал ми е за доцнам.
    Жал ми е што доцнам.

За goes with a noun, as in Жал ми е за тоа. A reason with a verb needs што.

  • Using a perfective present on its own after што.

Драго ми е што те запознаам.
Драго ми е што те запознав.

A perfective present such as запознаам cannot stand alone after што. Use the past запознав for a meeting that already happened, or say Драго ми е да те запознаам.
