мој / твој

My and Your

Level 1Sounds Like moǰ; tvoǰ

Мој means my and твој means your. They change to match the thing owned: мојот телефон, мојата куќа, моето дете.

How It Works

The forms.

  • Masculine: мој → мојот, твој → твојот
  • Feminine: моја → мојата, твоја → твојата
  • Neuter: мое → моето, твое → твоето
  • Plural: мои → моите, твои → твоите

Usually with the article. Talking about a particular thing, use the form with the article, and leave the noun bare: мојот телефон (my phone), твојата куќа (your house), моите клучеви (my keys).

Without the article. Use the bare form for one of several, or after сум: Тоа е мој пријател. (He is a friend of mine.) Оваа книга е твоја. (This book is yours.)

Твој is informal. To one person you speak to politely, use ваш. See Informal and Polite You and His Her Our Your and Their.

Close family. With words like мајка and брат, Macedonian usually uses a short form after the noun: мајка ми (my mother). See Family Words With Short Possessives.

Examples (6)

  1. Мојот телефон е нов.

    My phone is new.

  2. Мојата куќа е мала.

    My house is small.

Куќа is feminine, so the form is мојата.

  3. Ова е твоето кафе.

    This is your coffee.

  4. Каде се моите клучеви?

    Where are my keys?

  5. Тоа е мој пријател.

He is a friend of mine.

No article: one friend among several.

  6. Дали оваа книга е твоја?

    Is this book yours?

After сум the possessive has no article.

Common Mistakes

  • Matching the possessive to the speaker instead of the thing owned, as when a woman says мојата телефон.

    Мојата телефон е нов.
    Мојот телефон е нов.

Телефон is masculine, so the form is мојот, whoever is speaking.

  • Putting the article on the noun as well.

    Мојата куќата е мала.
    Мојата куќа е мала.

The article goes only on the first word, the possessive.

  • Using the feminine form for a neuter noun in -е.

    Ова е твојата кафе.
    Ова е твоето кафе.

Кафе is neuter, so the form is твоето.
