Telling Someone
Tell someone is ვეუბნები now, ვეტყვი in the future and ვუთხარი in the past.
How It Works
| Tense | I tell him or her | He or she tells him or her |
|---|---|---|
| present | ვეუბნები (veubnebi) | ეუბნება |
| future | ვეტყვი (vet'q'vi) | ეტყვის |
| past (aorist) | ვუთხარი (vutkhari) | უთხრა |
The verb also shows who hears it: მეუბნება (he tells me), გეუბნები (I tell you), მითხრა (she told me), გითხარი (I told you).
An order uses the past stem: მითხარი! (tell me!), უთხარი! (tell him!)
Compare say: ვამბობ, ვიტყვი, ვთქვი. Use say when you don't name a listener: რა თქვა? (What did he say?) Use tell when you do: რა გითხრა? (What did he tell you?)
The listener stays in the dative in the present, the future and the past. Only the teller and the words said change their case in the past, as with any doing verb.
