One or Two Negative Words

Level 5

A negative word such as არავინ can stand alone or with არ; careful writing tends to use one, everyday speech often uses both.

How It Works

Georgian negative words already mean not: არავინ (no one), არაფერი (nothing), არსად (nowhere), არასდროს (never). You can use them in two ways:

Careful writingEveryday speechMeaning
არავინ მოვიდა.არავინ არ მოვიდა.No one came.
არაფერი ვიცი.არაფერი არ ვიცი.I don't know anything.
იქ არასდროს ვყოფილვარ.იქ არასდროს არ ვყოფილვარ.I have never been there.

Both columns are correct, and the meaning is the same: the second negative does not cancel the first. News and official texts tend to use one negative word; conversation often uses two.

Two negative words can share one verb: ამის შესახებ არავის არაფერი უთქვამს (nobody has said anything about this).

ვინმე and რამე (anyone, anything) belong in questions, requests and if-clauses. In a statement with not, use the negative word: არავინ, არაფერი.

Examples (5)

  1. არავინ მოვიდა.

    No one came.

One negative word, as in careful writing.

  2. არავინ არ მოვიდა.

    Nobody came.

Everyday speech often adds არ; the meaning stays the same.

  3. არაფერი არ ვიცი.

    I don't know anything.

    Two negatives, one meaning: nothing.

  4. იქ არასდროს ვყოფილვარ.

    I've never been there.

    არასდროს alone already means never.

  5. ამის შესახებ არავის არაფერი უთქვამს.

Nobody has said anything about this.

Two negative words share one verb in the perfect.

Common Mistakes

  • Using ვინმე to say no one in a statement.

    დღეს ვინმე არ მოვიდა.
    დღეს არავინ მოვიდა.

ვინმე (anyone) belongs in questions, requests and if-clauses, so as a statement ვინმე არ მოვიდა does not say that no one came. To say no one, use არავინ.
