No -მა With Coming and Going
Becoming verbs keep the subject in the nominative, even in the past.
How It Works
Doing verbs put the doer in the ergative in the past: ნინომ წერილი დაწერა. Becoming verbs do not. Their subject stays in the nominative in every tense:
- ნინო მოდის (Nino is coming)
- ნინო მოვა (Nino will come)
- ნინო მოვიდა (Nino came)
Becoming verbs include coming and going (მოვიდა, წავიდა), returning (დაბრუნდა), staying (დარჩა), sitting down (დაჯდა), being born (დაიბადა) and to be (იყო).
Two clues help you spot them:
- They have no object. Something happens to the subject.
- Their they-form in the past ends in -ნენ: მოვიდნენ, დაბრუნდნენ. Doing verbs end in -ეს: დაწერეს.
