Becoming Verbs
Becoming verbs tell what happens to the subject, and their subject is always in the nominative.
How It Works
A becoming verb tells what happens to its subject: it returns, begins, ends, grows or is born. It has no object.
| Person | Present | Future | Past |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | ვბრუნდები | დავბრუნდები | დავბრუნდი |
| you | ბრუნდები | დაბრუნდები | დაბრუნდი |
| he, she | ბრუნდება | დაბრუნდება | დაბრუნდა |
| they | ბრუნდებიან | დაბრუნდებიან | დაბრუნდნენ |
Notice the endings: -ი for I and you, -ა for he or she, with no -ს. The they-form is -იან in the present and -ნენ in the past.
Many common verbs work this way: იწყება (begins), მთავრდება (ends), იზრდება (grows), იბადება (is born), რჩება (stays).
The subject is in the nominative in every tense, so these verbs never take -მა: ფილმი დამთავრდა (the film ended).
