-ეს/-ნენ (They in the Past)
They in the Past
In the aorist, they-forms end in -ეს for doing verbs and -ნენ for becoming verbs.
How It Works
The they-form of the aorist has two endings:
| Verb type | Ending | Example | Subject |
|---|---|---|---|
| doing | -ეს | გააკეთეს, დაწერეს | ბავშვებმა |
| activity | -ეს | ითამაშეს, იცეკვეს | ბავშვებმა |
| becoming | -ნენ | მოვიდნენ, დაბრუნდნენ | ბავშვები |
The ending and the subject go together. If the verb ends in -ეს, the subject takes -მა. If it ends in -ნენ, the subject stays in the nominative.
- სტუმრებმა ყველაფერი შეჭამეს (the guests ate everything)
- სტუმრები გვიან მოვიდნენ (the guests came late)
To be follows the becoming pattern: იყვნენ (they were).
This makes -ნენ a good test: if a verb's they-form ends in -ნენ, it is a becoming verb, and it never takes -მა.
