-ით (Instrumental)
The Instrumental Case
The instrumental case adds -ით to say by what or with what.
How It Works
| Noun | Instrumental | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ავტობუსი | ავტობუსით | by bus |
| მატარებელი | მატარებლით | by train |
| მანქანა | მანქანით | by car |
| მეტრო | მეტროთი | by metro |
| ფეხი | ფეხით | on foot |
| კალამი | კალმით | with a pen |
Some nouns also lose a vowel here: კალამი becomes კალმით, and მატარებელი becomes მატარებლით. ღვინო (wine) loses its final vowel: ღვინით.
Use the instrumental for how you travel, as in ბათუმში მატარებლით მივდივართ (we're going to Batumi by train), and for what you use, as in ხინკალს ხელით ვჭამთ (we eat khinkali with our hands).
For with a person, Georgian uses -თან ერთად instead: ნინოსთან ერთად (with Nino).
Some time words end in -ით too: დილით (in the morning).
