-ისა/-სა/-ითა (Long Endings)
Long Case Endings
Formal and older Georgian sometimes adds -ა to case endings: ამისა, სიყვარულითა. Today the long forms live on in fixed phrases.
How It Works
| Case | Short | Long |
|---|---|---|
| dative | -ს | -სა |
| genitive | -ის | -ისა |
| instrumental | -ით | -ითა |
| adverbial | -ად | -ადა |
Older Georgian used the long forms much more. Modern Georgian keeps them in a few places:
- Fixed phrases: მიუხედავად ამისა (despite this), გარდა ამისა (besides this), გარდა იმისა, რომ (besides the fact that).
- Two nouns joined by და: in careful writing the first often takes the long ending, as in ქართული ენისა და ლიტერატურის მასწავლებელი (a teacher of Georgian language and literature) and სიყვარულითა და პატივისცემით (with love and respect).
- Poetry and older texts, where the extra syllable also helps the rhythm.
You do not need to use the long forms yourself, apart from the fixed phrases. When you read one, take off the -ა and you have the ending you know.
