Final -ა or -ე Dropped
Words That Lose Their Final Vowel
Common nouns ending in -ა or -ე drop that vowel before -ის and -ით.
How It Works
| Nominative | Genitive | Instrumental |
|---|---|---|
| დედა | დედის | დედით |
| მანქანა | მანქანის | მანქანით |
| სკოლა | სკოლის | სკოლით |
| ხე | ხის | ხით |
| მზე | მზის | მზით |
Endings built on these forms follow the same rule: -თვის is built on the genitive (დედისთვის, for mom), and -დან on the -ით form (სკოლიდან, from school).
A genitive can name what a thing is made of: ხის სახლი (a wooden house, literally a house of wood).
Personal names do not drop the vowel. They add -ს, like nouns ending in -ო: ანას (Ana's), ნინოს (Nino's).
The plural drops a final -ა as well: დედა, დედები; მანქანა, მანქანები.
