მისი თქმით

According to Someone

Level 5Sounds Like misi tkmit

მისი თქმით means according to him or her; put any person in the genitive before თქმით.

How It Works

To pass on what someone said without quoting them, name the person in the genitive and add თქმით (tkmit):

  • მისი თქმით (according to him or her)
  • მათი თქმით (according to them)
  • ექიმის თქმით (according to the doctor)
  • ნინოს თქმით (according to Nino)

თქმით is the verbal noun თქმა (saying) with -ით, the instrumental ending. Other nouns work the same way: ჩემი აზრით (in my opinion), მისი აზრით (in his or her opinion).

News reports use this phrase all the time, usually at the start of the sentence and followed by a comma. The rest of the sentence keeps its normal tense: ექიმის თქმით, ნინო მალე გამოჯანმრთელდება (according to the doctor, Nino will soon get well).

In conversation, the quote ending -ო (Level 3) often does the same job: ხვალ მოვალო (he says he'll come tomorrow).
