Words That Lose a Vowel
Some nouns drop the vowel of their last syllable before -ის, -ით and -ებ-.
How It Works
| Nominative | Dative | Genitive | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| მეგობარი | მეგობარს | მეგობრის | მეგობრები |
| წყალი | წყალს | წყლის | წყლები |
| კალამი | კალამს | კალმის | კალმები |
| მასწავლებელი | მასწავლებელს | მასწავლებლის | მასწავლებლები |
| წელი | წელს | წლის | წლები |
You already know one of these: წლის in ოცი წლის ვარ is the genitive of წელი (year).
The vowel that drops usually sits before ლ, რ, მ or ნ. Many words with these letters keep their vowel, though: სახელი, სახელის (name, of the name). A dictionary shows the genitive, so check it there.
The plural keeps the shorter stem in every case: მეგობრები, მეგობრებს, მეგობრებთან. So does the adverbial -ად: მეგობრად (as a friend).
