გთხოვთ with an optative verb makes a polite, formal request: please do this.

How It Works

To a friendPolitely or to several people

გთხოვ, აქ არ მოწიო.გთხოვთ, აქ არ მოწიოთ.

გთხოვთ (gtkhovt) with the optative sounds formal. You will see it on signs and hear it in announcements, shops and offices.

The optative works as in other requests: the object is nominative (კარი, ტელეფონები), and არ before the verb makes it please don't.

In everyday speech, people also put გთხოვთ with an ordinary command: კარი დახურეთ, გთხოვთ. Both are polite, and the optative one is the more formal of the two.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing polite გთხოვთ with the friendly verb form.

    გთხოვთ, დახურო კარი.
    გთხოვთ, დახუროთ კარი.

    With გთხოვთ, the verb also takes -თ.
