Asking Politely
Ask with a future verb to make a polite request: ერთ ყავას მომცემთ?
How It Works
| Order | Polite request |
|---|---|
(Give me a coffee.) (Could I have a coffee?) |
(Help me!) (Could you help me?) |
(Tell me.) (Would you tell me?) |
The future question asks what the other person will do, and that leaves them room to say no. Add თუ შეიძლება (please) to make it softer still: ერთ ჩაის მომცემთ, თუ შეიძლება?
Watch the object. An order uses the past group, so its object is in the nominative: მომეცი ერთი ყავა. The future question takes the dative: ერთ ყავას მომცემთ? The number before it loses its -ი as well: ერთ.
To a friend, leave off the -თ: მომცემ?
