Another Way to Say Don't
არ with the optative makes a don't, often a friendly warning or reminder.
How It Works
To tell someone not to do something, you already know ნუ: ნუ ტირი (don't cry). Another way is არ with the optative.
| Optative | With არ |
|---|---|
| წახვიდე (you go) | არ წახვიდე! (Don't go!) |
| დაკეტო (you lock) | კარი არ დაკეტო! (Don't lock the door!) |
| გაცივდე (you catch a cold) | არ გაცივდე! (Don't catch a cold!) |
| დაგავიწყდეს (you forget) | არ დაგავიწყდეს! (Don't forget!) |
არ with the optative often means make sure this doesn't happen. People use it a lot for things that could happen by accident, such as forgetting or catching a cold. ნუ is the usual way to stop something that is going on now: ნუ ტირი.
The optative works as everywhere else: the object of a doing verb is nominative (კარი არ დაკეტო), and with forgetting, whose person is dative, the person is shown by the marker: დაგავიწყდეს (you forget).
For several people or for polite თქვენ, add -თ: არ დაგავიწყდეთ (don't forget).
