por ke

So That

Level 4

Por ke gives the aim of an action when another person is involved.

How It Works

Same doerDifferent doer

After por ke the verb almost always ends in -u. You may use povu (can) for a possibility: por ke ĉiuj povu skribi ĉion.

To say what you do not want, put ne before the -u verb: Mi skribas la daton, por ke vi ne forgesu ĝin.

The aim is a wish, so a verb in -os or -as does not fit.

Examples (4)

  1. Mi parolas malrapide, por ke vi komprenu.

I speak slowly so that you understand.

The aim belongs to vi, so the clause has its own subject and -u.

Ewa sent the message early so that we all would have time.

The clause with por ke names what Ewa hoped for.

I write down the date so that you do not forget it.

Ne comes before the -u verb to say what should not happen.

The teacher speaks slowly so that the students can write everything down.

Povu gives the possibility the teacher wants.

Common Mistakes

  • Using -os after por ke.

Mi parolas malrapide, por ke vi komprenos.
Mi parolas malrapide, por ke vi komprenu.

The aim is wanted, not predicted, so por ke is followed by -u.

  • Using por ke with an infinitive.

Por ke starts a clause with its own subject and a verb in -u, never an infinitive. When the same person goes and buys, use por and an infinitive.
