volas, ke + Verb in -u
Wanting Someone to Act
When one person wants another to act, the second action is a ke clause with -u.
How It Works
| Verb | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| voli | Mi volas, ke vi venu. | I want you to come. |
| peti | Ana petas, ke ni atendu. | Ana asks us to wait. |
| ordoni | La instruisto ordonas, ke ni silentu. | The teacher orders us to be quiet. |
| proponi | Mi proponas, ke ni iru al la parko. | I suggest that we go to the park. |
The same -u appears after estas necese: Estas necese, ke ni parolu pli malrapide.
If the same person wants and acts, use an infinitive: Mi volas veni. The pattern voli + infinitive needs the same subject for both verbs. When the second action belongs to someone else, use ke and -u.
The -u form shows a wish or a goal, so the verb after ke ends in -u here, not in -os or -as.
Examples (5)
- Mi volas, ke vi venu al la kongreso.
I want you to come to the congress.
The action venu belongs to vi, so there is a ke clause with -u.
- Ana petas, ke ni atendu ĉi tie.
Ana asks us to wait here.
Peti is followed by ke and -u.
- La instruisto ordonas, ke ni silentu.
The teacher orders us to be quiet.
Silentu shows what the teacher wants.
- Mi proponas, ke ni iru al la parko.
I suggest that we go to the park.
Proponi also takes ke and -u.
- Estas necese, ke ni parolu pli malrapide.
It is necessary that we speak more slowly.
After estas necese, the ke clause also takes -u.
Common Mistakes
Using -os after a verb of wanting.
Mi volas, ke vi venos.Mi volas, ke vi venu. After voli the second action is wanted, not predicted, so it takes -u.
Using object and infinitive after voli.
Mi volas vin veni al la kongreso.Mi volas, ke vi venu al la kongreso.Voli with an infinitive needs the same subject for both verbs. A different doer needs a ke clause.
