rajti / bezoni / scipovi + Infinitive

Be Allowed, Need, Know How

Level 3

Each verb adds one idea to an action: permission, need or skill.

How It Works

VerbIdeaExample
rajtibe allowed toĈu mi rajtas eniri?
bezonineed toMi bezonas dormi.
scipoviknow how toŜi scipovas kanti.

The verb that shows tense changes, and the infinitive after it never does: Ŝi scipovis kanti, Ŝi scipovos kanti.

Povi says that something is possible. Scipovi says that you learned the skill, so it fits swimming, singing or playing an instrument. Bezoni can also take a noun: Mi bezonas ripozon.

With ne, rajti forbids and bezoni removes the need: Vi ne rajtas fumi (you may not smoke), Vi ne bezonas atendi (you do not have to wait).

    May I come in, sir?

I need to sleep because I am tired.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding por after bezoni.

    Mi bezonas por dormi.
    Mi bezonas dormi.

    The infinitive follows bezonas directly.

  • Putting a finite verb after scipovas.

    Ŝi scipovas kantas.
    Ŝi scipovas kanti.

Only the first verb shows tense. The second verb is the infinitive.
