Negative Commands With Proclisis

Level 6

Negative commands use present subjunctive with weak pronouns before the verb.

How It Works

Contrast fes-ho with no ho facis and vine with no vinguis. The negative instruction uses a subjunctive form rather than merely adding no to the affirmative command. Any weak-pronoun cluster appears between no and the verb.

Negative instructions in a document should keep a consistent addressee. No ho facis addresses tu; no ho feu can address vosaltres or respectful vós; no ho faci addresses vostè. The pronoun stays before the verb in each case. A lexical pronominal command such as no us n'oblideu needs the whole group. Avoid switching person forms merely because one command looks more formal in isolation.

Examples (3)

  1. No ho faci encara.

Do not do it yet. (Addressing vostè.)

  2. No ho feu fins demà.

Do not do it until tomorrow. (Addressing vosaltres or vós.)

  3. No us n'oblideu.

    Do not forget it.
