Basic Subject Verb Object Order
Neutral statements often use subject–verb–object, but subjects can be omitted or placed elsewhere.
How It Works
La Maria compra pa gives the person, the action and the object in that order. A known subject pronoun is often omitted because the verb and context identify it: compro pa. An explicit pronoun is still correct, especially for a contrast such as jo llegeixo i tu escrius.
Adverbs are not restricted to the position after the verb. En Jordi sempre llegeix is normal Catalan. Yes/no questions can keep statement order and use question intonation: la Maria compra pa? Subject inversion is possible, but it is not a compulsory question rule.
Articles before names vary: Central Catalan uses en/el Marc and la Maria, often l'Andreu before a vowel; Balearic varieties use en/na and n'Andreu. Valencian usage often omits the article. Fronted topics may be resumed by a pronoun, as in el pa, el compro aquí; this does not imply that every kind of emphatic fronting requires a clitic.
