Pronominal Verb + en/hi
Lexicalized En and Hi
Some verbs require en or hi as part of their established pronominal meaning.
How It Works
Anar-se'n means leave; sortir-se'n means manage or get through a difficulty. In these uses, en is not simply an optional replacement for a freshly omitted de phrase. Replacing a regular verb's complement and removing part of a lexicalized expression are different operations.
Hi also belongs to established expressions such as veure-s'hi, meaning be able to see, and tenir-hi a veure, meaning have something to do with a matter. Learn the complete expression and its meaning rather than translating hi as there every time.
The reflexive pronoun changes with the subject, while en or hi remains. Position and spelling follow the verb form: se'n surt, sortir-se'n, no te'n vagis.
