hi (complement preposicional)

Hi for Non-de Prepositional Complements

Level 3

Hi replaces many non-de prepositional complements selected by a verb.

How It Works

Penso en el viatge becomes hi penso. Estic d'acord amb la proposta can become hi estic d'acord. Hi represents the understood complement, even though it does not refer to a physical place.

Do not map the preposition alone to a pronoun mechanically. Many a phrases naming recipients use li or els, while some person complements are better retained with a strong pronoun for clarity or contrast. Learn the whole verb-plus-complement construction, such as pensar en or acostumar-se a.

For many complements introduced by de, en is the contrast: parlar del tema becomes parlar-ne. Place hi before a finite verb or after an infinitive, and never apostrophize it. If the full complement is repeated, check whether it is a deliberate topic or clarification rather than unintended duplication.

Examples (3)

  1. Penso en el viatge; hi penso sovint.

I think about the trip; I think about it often.

  2. Estàs d’acord amb la proposta? Sí, hi estic d’acord.

Do you agree with the proposal? Yes, I agree with it.

  3. No m’hi acostumo.

I am not getting used to it.
