hi (pronom locatiu)
Locative Hi
Locative hi replaces an understood place complement that is not a point of departure with de.
How It Works
Vaig al mercat becomes hi vaig when the market is already known. Hi can refer to being in a place as well as movement toward it: visc a Girona becomes hi visc. It does not need to mean only the English word there.
Put hi before a finite verb or after an infinitive: hi vull anar or vull anar-hi. It does not apostrophize. In a negative statement, place no first: no hi vaig. Do not repeat the full place phrase in an ordinary neutral answer unless it serves a separate topic or clarification.
For origin introduced by de, en is commonly used instead: vinc de Girona becomes en vinc. Hi also replaces certain non-locative prepositional complements, but that is a separate use to learn with the verb.
