es (reflexiu i recíproc)
Reflexive and Reciprocal Es
Reflexive pronouns can refer back to the subject or, with plural participants, express reciprocity.
How It Works
Es coneixen can mean they know each other. The plural subject supplies more than one participant, while es marks the reciprocal relationship. With nosaltres or vosaltres, use ens or us: ens coneixem, us escriviu.
With a third-person subject, es can mark a reflexive action, a reciprocal relationship or a lexical pronominal verb. Es renta les mans normally refers to the subject washing their own hands; es coneixen requires the context to identify the mutual participants.
A plural subject alone does not decide the interpretation. Es miren can describe looking at one another, while es pentinen can describe each person combing their own hair. Add an appropriate clarification when ambiguity matters. First- and second-person groups use ens and us for the same broad contrasts. Keep the pronoun matched to the subject and distinguish it from an object pronoun referring to someone else.
