အံ့

The Old Literary Future

Level 6

Modern writing says မည် and speech says မယ်, so keep အံ့ for reading.

How It Works

အံ့ is the old literary future. It means "shall" or "will", and often carries a speaker's plan or promise: "I shall tell you".

Older literatureModern writingSpeech

ပေ often comes before it and gives the line weight: ပေအံ့. A question with a question word adds နည်း: မည်သို့ ပြုရအံ့နည်း means what shall I do?

You meet အံ့ in old chronicles, classic novels, poems and the voice of a storyteller who promises to tell a tale. Some writers use it today on purpose, to make a line sound grand or old.

A modern news report, notice or letter uses မည်. A meeting notice that ends with ကျင်းပအံ့ sounds like a royal decree.

Keep it apart from the word အံ့ဩ (to be surprised), which starts with the same sound and has nothing to do with the future.

Plural ကြ comes before အံ့, as in ခရီးထွက်ကြအံ့ (we shall set out).
