လော / နည်း
Questions in Writing
Before these endings, သည် becomes သ: သိသည် turns into သိသလော (do you know?), and မည် stays မည်.
How It Works
Written questions follow the same rule as spoken ones. A yes-or-no question takes one ending, and a question with a question word takes another.
| Question | Writing | Speech |
|---|---|---|
| yes or no, now | သိပါသလော။ | သိလား။ |
| yes or no, future | လာမည်လော။ | လာမလား။ |
Written question words: မည်သူ (who), မည်သည့် (which), မည်သို့ (how), မည်မျှ (how much), အဘယ်ကြောင့် (why). Older writing also uses အဘယ် for "what".
You will meet these endings in headlines (ဈေးနှုန်းများ ဆက်လက် မြင့်တက်မည်လော။), in essays that ask a question and then answer it, and in older stories. Writers address the reader as သင် (you).
Two rules carry over from speech. A question word needs နည်း, never လော. And a written question word belongs in a written sentence: ဘယ်သူ goes with လဲ, and မည်သူ goes with နည်း.
Add ပါ before သ for a polite question to the reader: ရောက်ဖူးပါသလော (have you ever been?). Answers to these questions use the normal written endings, such as သည် and ပါသည်.
