ပေသည်
Weight in Literary Prose
ပေ also goes before other endings: ပေမည် and ပေလိမ့်မည် (will surely), and the older ပေ၏.
How It Works
ပေ is a small word that makes a written statement sound firm and thoughtful, like "indeed" or "truly" in English.
| Plain | With ပေ | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| မှန်သည်။ | မှန်ပေသည်။ | That is true indeed. |
| လှပသည်။ | လှပပေသည်။ | It is truly beautiful. |
| ကောင်းလိမ့်မည်။ | ကောင်းပေလိမ့်မည်။ | It will surely be good. |
Put ပေ right after the verb, before the ending. The ending tells the time as usual: သည် for a plain statement, မည် or လိမ့်မည် for the future.
Editorials, essays and literature use ပေသည် to close a point: education truly matters, such effort truly deserves praise. A writer uses it once or twice in a piece, at the key line. Plain news reports keep to plain သည်.
The negative မ…ပေ is a separate written ending that means simply "not". In speech, the same weight comes from tone and from words like တကယ် (really): တကယ် လှတယ် (it is really beautiful).
ပေ comes after any other helper words on the verb, such as နိုင် (can): ကောင်းနိုင်ပေသည် means it can truly be good. Only the ending comes after ပေ.
