It Will Probably Happen

Level 4

In writing the same ending is လိမ့်မည်.

How It Works

လိမ့်မယ် ends a sentence that is a guess you feel sure about. It takes the place of (It will probably rain.)

EndingMeaning
It will rain.
It will probably rain.
နက်ဖြန် မိုးရွာလိမ့်မည်။ (writing)It will probably rain tomorrow.

The guess can be about the future or about right now.

  • Future: ညနေ မိုးရွာလိမ့်မယ် (it will probably rain this evening).
  • Now, with နေ: ရုံးရောက်နေလိမ့်မယ် (he must be at the office by now), ဆာနေလိမ့်မယ် (you must be hungry).

To show the guess is yours, add (I think she will like it).

A friendly guess often comes before advice: ဆာနေလိမ့်မယ်၊ စားပါဦး (you must be hungry, so have something to eat).

In writing, use လိမ့်မည် with written words around it, such as နက်ဖြန် for "tomorrow". Weather reports and essays use it. Keep the two styles apart: say မနက်ဖြန် …

Examples (5)

It'll probably rain this evening, so take an umbrella.

လိမ့်မယ် makes the rain a confident guess.

Ko Ko is probably at the office by now.

With နေ, the guess is about the present.

The kids are worn out, so I expect them to fall asleep early.

The guess follows from what the speaker can see.

I think the teacher will like this letter.

A man adds လို့ ထင်တယ် to show the guess is his.

You must be hungry. Please have something to eat.

A woman says ရှင် for "you" and guesses how the listener feels.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting လိမ့်မယ် after the ending တယ်.

လိမ့်မယ် is itself the ending, so it goes right after the bare verb.

  • Mixing the written လိမ့်မည် with spoken words.

မနက်ဖြန် is a spoken word, so the ending is လိမ့်မယ်. In writing, both change: နက်ဖြန် …
