အနေဖြင့်
In the Role of Someone
It also means "by way of" with some nouns: စုစုပေါင်းအနေဖြင့် (in total).
How It Works
အနေဖြင့် means "as" in the sense of "in the role of". Put it after the job or role someone is acting in.
| Style | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| writing | အနေဖြင့် | ဆရာမအနေဖြင့် |
| speech | အနေနဲ့ | ဆရာမအနေနဲ့ |
Use it for jobs and titles (as a minister, as head teacher), for roles at an event (as a guest), and for groups (as parents). Speeches often open with it: ကျောင်းအုပ်ကြီးအနေဖြင့် … means as head teacher, I ….
A few nouns that are not roles take it too, with the meaning "by way of" or "as a whole": စုစုပေါင်းအနေဖြင့် (in total), ယေဘုယျအနေဖြင့် (in general).
English "as" also means "like". Burmese uses a different word for that: ကဲ့သို့ in writing and လို in speech. With a person, အနေဖြင့် names a role he or she really has.
The spoken partner is အနေနဲ့: ကျွန်မအနေနဲ့ ဒီအစီအစဉ်ကို ကြိုက်တယ် (Speaking for myself, I like this plan. A woman is speaking.) Keep နဲ့ out of written sentences.
Put it right after the noun, with no space: ဝန်ကြီးအနေဖြင့်.
