For a person, put a word for what he or she said before အရ: ဝန်ကြီး၏ အဆိုအရ (according to the minister).

How It Works

အရ means "according to", "under" or "based on". Put it after the noun that tells the reader where the information comes from.

Many of these nouns end in ချက်, which turns a verb into "a statement" or "a result": ပြောကြား (say) becomes ပြောကြားချက် (a statement). For a person, use such a noun, or အဆို (what someone says): ဝန်ကြီး၏ ပြောကြားချက်အရ and ဝန်ကြီး၏ အဆိုအရ both mean according to the minister. A person alone before အရ sounds wrong.

News puts the အရ phrase first, then the fact: the reader learns who said it before what was said. The phrase can be long, with ၏ joining the parts: စစ်တမ်းတစ်ခု၏ ရလဒ်အရ (according to the result of a survey).

အရ belongs to both styles. In speech it joins ရဲ့ and a spoken ending: ဆရာဝန်ရဲ့ အကြံပြုချက်အရ ဆေးသောက်နေတယ်။ In writing it joins ၏ and သည်.

  1. မိုးလေဝသခန့်မှန်းချက်အရ နက်ဖြန် ရန်ကုန်တွင် မိုးရွာမည်။

    According to the weather forecast, it will rain in Yangon tomorrow.

    အရ comes after the forecast, then the news follows.

  2. ထုတ်ပြန်ချက်အရ စာမေးပွဲရလဒ်များကို ဇွန်လ ၁၅ ရက်တွင် ကြေညာမည်။

    According to the statement, the exam results will be announced on June 15.

    အရ follows ထုတ်ပြန်ချက် (the statement).

  3. စည်းကမ်းအရ စာကြည့်တိုက်အတွင်း ဖုန်းပြောခွင့် မရှိပါ။

    Under the rules, phone calls are not allowed in the library.

    With a rule, အရ means "under".

  4. စစ်တမ်းတစ်ခု၏ ရလဒ်အရ လူငယ်အများစုသည် ဖုန်းဖြင့် သတင်းဖတ်ကြသည်။

    According to a survey, most young people read the news on their phones.

    A longer phrase with ၏ comes before အရ.

  5. ဆရာဝန်ရဲ့ အကြံပြုချက်အရ ဆေးကို နေ့တိုင်း သောက်နေတယ်။

    On the doctor's advice, I take the medicine every day.

    A spoken sentence: အရ goes with ရဲ့ and တယ်.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting a person straight before အရ.

    ဝန်ကြီးအရ ဈေးနှုန်းများ ကျဆင်းမည်။
    ဝန်ကြီး၏ ပြောကြားချက်အရ ဈေးနှုန်းများ ကျဆင်းမည်။

    Put အရ after what the person said, here ပြောကြားချက် (statement).
