The spoken form is နဲ့အတူ, and in casual talk people often say နဲ့ အတူတူ.

How It Works

နှင့်အတူ is made of two parts. နှင့် is the written word for "with", and အတူ means "together". Put the whole phrase after the person or thing that joins in.

It works with people and with things. With people, it says who went or lived with someone: ဝန်ကြီးသည် တာဝန်ရှိသူများနှင့်အတူ သွားရောက်ခဲ့သည် means the minister went with officials. With things, it means "along with": a letter sent along with gifts.

News uses နှင့်အတူ when a leader visits a place with a team, or when a report lists items that came together. Letters and invitations use it too.

Plain နှင့် can also mean "and" between two nouns. Add အတူ when you want to say the two did something side by side. Keep the written form in written sentences: နဲ့ never goes into a sentence that ends with သည်.

  1. ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် မိသားစုနှင့်အတူ မန္တလေးတွင် နေထိုင်သည်။

    Daw Khin Khin lives with her family in Mandalay.

    နှင့်အတူ shows who she lives with.

  2. ဝန်ကြီးသည် တာဝန်ရှိသူများနှင့်အတူ ရေဘေးသင့်ဒေသသို့ သွားရောက်ခဲ့သည်။

    The minister went to the flood-hit area together with officials.

    A news sentence: နှင့်အတူ names the people who went too.

  3. လက်ဆောင်ပစ္စည်းများနှင့်အတူ ကျေးဇူးတင်စာတစ်စောင်ကိုလည်း ပေးပို့ခဲ့သည်။

    Along with the gifts, a thank-you letter was sent too.

    With things, နှင့်အတူ means "along with".

  4. ကျောင်းသားများသည် ဆရာများနှင့်အတူ ပုဂံသို့ လေ့လာရေးခရီး ထွက်ကြသည်။

    The students went on a study trip to Bagan with their teachers.

    နှင့်အတူ joins the teachers to the trip.

  5. ဦးအောင်ကျော်သည် ဇနီးနှင့်အတူ ဘုရားဖူး ထွက်ခဲ့သည်။

    U Aung Kyaw went on a pagoda pilgrimage with his wife.

    နှင့်အတူ comes right after ဇနီး (wife).

Common Mistakes

  • Using spoken နဲ့ in a written sentence.

    ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် မိသားစုနဲ့အတူ နေထိုင်သည်။
    ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် မိသားစုနှင့်အတူ နေထိုင်သည်။

    A sentence with သည် takes the written နှင့်.

  • Leaving out နှင့်.

    ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် မိသားစုအတူ နေထိုင်သည်။
    ဒေါ်ခင်ခင်သည် မိသားစုနှင့်အတူ နေထိုင်သည်။

    အတူ needs နှင့် in front of it to join the noun.
