ကား / မူကား
Topics in Literary Prose
The set phrase အကြောင်းမူကား means "the reason is": it opens an explanation.
How It Works
ကား and မူကား come after a noun to make it the topic of the sentence, the thing the sentence is about. They belong to literature, older prose and formal writing.
| Form | Job | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ကား | sets up a topic | ဤမြို့ကား … |
| ကား … ကား | sets two topics side by side | အစ်ကိုကား … နှမကား … |
| မူကား | but as for | ကျွန်ုပ်မူကား … |
| အကြောင်းမူကား | the reason is | အကြောင်းမူကား … ဖြစ်သည်။ |
Modern news uses the plain subject marker သည်. ကား gives the topic more weight, so a writer uses it to introduce a place, a person or an idea with some ceremony. Two sentences with ကား set two topics against each other: the brother lives in town, the sister in the village.
မူကား turns from one topic to another: the others agree, but as for me, I do not. It often appears with ကျွန်ုပ်, the written "I".
In speech, the same contrast is ကတော့: ကျွန်တော်ကတော့ မသွားဘူး (As for me, I'm not going). ကတော့ never goes into a written sentence.
