မ…ခင်
Before Doing Something
This မ belongs to "before": မစားခင် means "before eating", and the sentence stays positive.
How It Works
To say "before", Burmese wraps the verb with မ and ခင်. The မ looks like the negative, but here it is part of "before": မစားခင် is "before eating", not "not eating".
| Verb | Before it | English |
|---|---|---|
| စား | မစားခင် | before eating |
| ထွက် | မထွက်ခင် | before leaving |
| ထမင်းစား | ထမင်းမစားခင် | before having a meal |
| အိပ်ရာဝင် | အိပ်ရာမဝင်ခင် | before going to bed |
With a noun and a verb, မ goes before the verb part only: ထမင်းမစားခင်. The "before" part comes first in the sentence, and the main action follows.
For a time of day, use the verb တိုင် (reach): ငါးနာရီ မတိုင်ခင် (before five o'clock). Add မှာ or က for emphasis: မလာခင်က (before I came).
For the opposite order, "after", use ပြီးရင် for plans and ပြီးတော့ for the past.
