About to Happen
When you leave, say (I'll be going home now).
How It Works
မယ် is the ending for the future. Put တော့ before it and the future comes close: the thing will happen now, or in a moment.
| Burmese | English |
|---|---|
The train will leave. |
The train is about to leave. |
I'll be going home now. |
တော့မယ် is how Burmese speakers take their leave: ကျွန်မ ပြန်ပါတော့မယ်ရှင်။ (said by a woman) or ကျွန်တော် သွားပါတော့မယ်ခင်ဗျာ။ (said by a man). With friends, သွားတော့မယ်နော်။ is enough.
It also warns that something is close: မိုးရွာတော့မယ်။ (It's about to rain.) and (The rice is almost ready.)
The negative "not any more" is a separate pattern: မ… For something you were just about to do, Burmese has မလို့.
In a question, တော့မလား asks whether something is about to happen: သွားတော့မလား။ (Are you leaving now?)
