তেতিয়া / হঠাতে

Then and Suddenly

Level 3Sounds Like tētiẏā / haṭhātē

আমি তেতিয়া ডেকা আছিলোঁ “we were young then”, and ৰফিকুল হঠাতে ৰৈ গ’ল “Rafiqul suddenly stopped”.

How It Works

তেতিয়া points to a moment in the story. It is also the answer word for যেতিয়া “when”, which has its own row.

WordMeaningExample
তেতিয়াthen, at that timeতেতিয়া মোৰ লগত টকা নাছিল “I had no money with me then”
হঠাতেsuddenlyআকাশখন হঠাতে ক’লা হৈ গ’ল “the sky went dark suddenly”

Both words keep their shape for every person and tense. They sit at the start of the sentence or right before the verb. For “now”, use এতিয়া.

The word হঠাতে is also spelled হঠাৎ, and both are common. It can also stand after the doer, right before the verb: সিহঁতে হঠাতে কথা পতা বন্ধ কৰি দিলে “they suddenly stopped talking”.
